Millie Churches - Emerging Artist
"From childhood I was surrounded by curious reclaimed objects, my Dad used to collect strange finds from working at the ‘dump’ and brought them home. This influenced my interest in sculptural objects and qualities of form. I have discovered a passion in metalwork and am a keen object maker. Archaeology I find to be a great interest, the feeling of anticipation when unearthing an archaeological artefact is the same excitement I feel in the creation of sculpture – those moments of object discovery."
Millie Churches (b.1998) is a BA Fine Art undergraduate and an emerging artist with a keen passion for metal fabrication in realizing contemporary sculpture. Alongside sculpture, printmaking, drawing and photography make up her practice. Churches has produced a range of sculptural work from fabricated large scale steel sculptures to handheld metal casts in bronze, brass and copper. The artwork is directly influenced by the study of Archaeology, the work is centred around establishing a connection through context and the narrative of objects symbolising an archaeological artefact moving through time.
Churches draws from archaeological practices such as capturing discovery and excavation to
recreate tactile works, translating archaeological concepts into contemporary art to identify a middle point between rediscovering the old and establishing the new. With a fascination for ceramic forms specifically pots, such vessels consistently act as the main object body within her sculptural work and are representative of her practice.
The ‘pot’ holds a rich and varied history since the times of early technology dating back thousands of years before today. The Ancient Greeks and Romans developed their own memorable ceramic signatures which are widely recognised. It is from these ancient civilisations Churches gains influence from their distinct and dramatic stylised pots. Within her practice the relationship between contemporary art and archaeology takes shape as they share intricate conversations of preservation, display, memory and artistic ability throughout time.
